Presenting an interesting pilgrimage site in Ganjam district, Taratarini Temple is one of the oldest temples of Mother Goddess. Situated on the Kumari hills at the bank of Rushikulya River, Taratarini Temple is said to be the place where the breast of Sati Devi fell, and hence, it is worshipped as Breast Shrine.  Besides, the temple is also renowned as one of the four ancient Shakti Peethas and Tantra Peetha in India. It is believed that Tara Tarini was the principal deities of the temple.

The tale state that after the death of Lady Sati the Blue Lord lamented and enraged in loss, danced with Lady Sati's corpse resulting in scattering of the body parts in 51 spots across India. Each of these spots became a source of pure primal energy known as 51 Shakti Peeths and among them places where tantric power is greatest is referred as Adi Shakti Peeths according to the Shaktism cult.

Tara Tarini, the twin goddesses are considered the presiding deity of Ganjam. Thousands of people from far off places visit the temple on every Tuesday in the month of Chaitra and on sankrantis.
