Rameswaram Bridge, (India)
Built as a part of South Indian Railway project, this bridge was completed in 1912, its construction was started in the year of 1887. Around the same time, Neel Mandir temple was also constructed. In 1988, a road bridge was also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. This road bridge is also known as Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. Pamban Bridge is the second largest bridge in India, after the Bandra-Worli sea link, which has been constructed recently.
The bridge was designed by Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge Company of Chicago. The bridge was constructed by Head, Wringtson & co, Ltd of Thornaby-on-tees. The Pamban railway bridge is considered an engineering marvel and it was built within two years. 600 workers were involved in the construction of this bridge.
A 100-year-old railway bridge located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Pamban bridge connects Rameswaram island to the mainland. It is not just a railway bridge but a major tourist attraction in Tamil Nadu that leaves travellers awestruck with its scenic beauty. Surrounded by pristine blue waters till as far as your eyes can see, this bridge is 1 metre wide and 2.5km long. Narrowness of this bridge and the beauty around makes your train journey no less than an adventure. With 143 piers, spanning 2km between the mainland and the island, Pamban bridge is the second longest sea bridge in India.
The 2.057 km long bridge, also known as Bridge No.346 in Indian Railway reference, consists of over 140 spans. The amazing feature of a double-leaf section that can be raised to allow movement of ships and boats was designed by German engineer Scherzer. The 114th span, midway along the bridge, is this called the Scherzer span.
It is interesting to know that the Pamban bridge had withstood a cyclone storm in 1964. Though a huge damage was incurred on the bridge and many of its parts were washed away, the rolling life centre span was not damaged. This was designed by a German engineer Scherzer in 1913. This massive cyclone had flattened Dhanushkodi which is located nearby.
